Neurostatus e-Test is a web-based interactive test and certification tool for physicians, who are interested in using a standardised scoring system for the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and its Functional Systems (FS) in the context of multi-centre or single centre clinical studies.
The Neurostatus-EDSS has been adopted as standard in more than 160 phase II and III clinical trials in MS and Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in the last 20 years, and has been implemented in most of the pivotal trials that have led to the approval of current MS treatments. Neurostatus includes a set of definitions for the assessment of the Functional Systems (FS), the ambulation (AS; Ambulation Score) and the EDSS, summarized in a definition booklet (4). To further improve EDSS consistency an electronic data capturing was developed together with Neurostatus Systems Ltd., the Neurostatus e-Scoring (NESC). accredited with EDSS Competency Certification. Copies of previously achieved EDSS Competency Certificates can be provided to MSBase. Alternatively, MSBase Members can freely sit a competency test online using Neurostatus (www.neurostatus.net) to gain certification (currently Neurostatus). 8.

Background The Neurostatus-eEDSS is an electronic tool providing automated real-time feedback on inconsistencies of Neurostatus-EDSS calculations. It is widely used in clinical trials and in the assessment of people with MS. The scale was developed by a neurologist called John Kurtzke in 1983 as an advance from his previous 10 step Disability Status Scale (DSS). The EDSS scale ranges from 0 to 10 in 0.5 unit increments that represent higher levels of disability.

Of the tests assessing walking, the Timed-25 Foot Walk Test and the self-administered 12-Item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale are suitable for routine evaluation of walking performance. EDSS steps from 0 up to 4.0 should not change compared to the previous examinati-on, unless there is a change by one grade in at least one FS score. EDSS steps from 0 up to 1.5 can only apply if ambulation is “unrestricted”.
